Dan Barnes and Lina Tejoprayitno: These two alumni of UoC, honoured us by opening up the series of live interviews on Instagram.
Lina and Dan met during their MBA studies, and joined forces to build Pop Specs, a new concept of opticians, aiming to simplify the process and to offer really affordable specs shaping the lenses on site in record time: just 15 minutes! This charming couple gave Fran, our Media Lead, and the audience, a tour around the shop in the heart of Chester, showing live how the specs get done so quickly. Dan introduced the concept of the lenses popping into the frame and talked us through their three different set prices with no hidden costs, “so people can see exactly what they are paying for: coating, lenses and frame”. Routine, the key to face lockdown When they were asked about how they were during the third lockdown, both Lina and Dan agreed that for them the key was to keep their minds busy. “We are kind of lucky, because we are essential workers -admitted Dan-. Having the opticians gives me a bit of structure so I have not really deviated from my routine other than making the shop a bit more of quarantined off section and making sure we hit the regulations with everything. We have operated as normal which is great, so we are very lucky in that respect, and I touch wood and thank for that, because I know there are lots of nice businesses in Chester, they cannot open, and they are struggling, so I am very fortunate and certainly I do not take for granted the fact that it is being a lot easier on me and Lina than in most people. We have the chance to get out, so you don’t feel like you have to be constrained in”, explained Dan. Career opportunity in Marketing Dan and Lina recognise that lockdown has given them time to think about how they want to direct their business. They confessed working on the Social Media and the website by themselves. “We are trying Instagram super hard, but we are not professionals; so, if anyone wants to help us with social media, marketing and the website, send us an email or DM us on Instagram”, said Lina, encouraging those students that might be interested in the offer to get in touch with them for a further discussion. Dan and Lina were also catching up on series of Netflix and Amazon Prime, now that they have finished the University and do not have to think about their assignments. And looking at the future, their next project is the opening of a kiosk of Pop Specs in Trafford Centre, Manchester. At the end of the interview, they played the Yes! No! Game, having everyone in stitches by Dan’s sense of humour. The second edition of Lockdown Lives was conducted by Jonathon Roberts, our Digital Marketing Lead; having Tino as a guest, a second year Marketing Management student that shared his lockdown experience with us.
